One Piece Ends a Quarter-Century Tradition in 2026

This marks the conclusion of an iconic period for long-running series, with Toei Animation announcing a revised release plan for One Piece, which has run continuously for over a quarter-century and included dozens of filler arcs. Starting in the new year, after the Egghead Island arc concludes, the anime will take a quarterly hiatus until April, when the Elbaph arc kicks off.

Updated Production Plan

From now on, the series will produce two seasons every annually for a maximum of two dozen installments. The studio states this will help the anime to β€œdive even deeper into the core of the universe β€” incorporating more material, tempo, and pacing of the original manga.” However, producers end by promising β€œexciting surprises” during the hiatus period, which means more related projects, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, set to premiere during this gap.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The One Piece anime had a half-year break that began in October 2024 and ended in early 2025. The intermission was for the animators to enhance the animation quality and let the comic to build a lead to prevent a faster anime pace and repetitive summaries. The anime couldn't benefit more from this respite, and it has managed to deliver fans with numerous fight scenes, high-quality animation, and less filler than ever before.

Adopting Modern Trends

While some recap episodes sprouted up during the recent run, the benefits of this updated approach greatly outweigh the odd pause in the action. This also gives the manga, which is presently in the thick of the latest arc, to extend its lead on the adaptation. Per the announcement, this may result in a single installment of the series adapting one chapter, with some alternatively covering more material or additional to make up for scheduling.

It's the end of a generation for anime, as One Piece is the last big series to abandon the old-school way of creation, which focused on airing for almost the entire year. It's the reason why iconic series such as Naruto, and naturally itself have so many side stories, and the standard of the art can change drastically between installments and the following. Nowadays, series creation is organized in seasons, with one or two at most releasing each annually, allowing for improved visuals and more faithfulness to the source material.
