A minimum of 11 of the weather balloons, transporting thousands of packs of black-market cigarettes, have been collected so far

Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when dozens of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.

Air Travel Interruptions

The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.

National Security Measures

Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the main terminal.

Up to 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend passed through the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.

No fewer than 11 balloons containing numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.

Cross-Border Contraband Trend

While creating issues, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."

Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.

Cross-Border Effects

At the same time, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.

Illegal Transport Methods

In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."

Border Protection Aims

Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that such operations become unprofitable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."

Regional Security Context

These airspace violations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the continent.

Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
